Email verification vs email validation: what is the difference?

4 min read

Quick answer

Email validation checks that an address is written correctly (the right format and a real domain). Email verification goes further and checks that the mailbox itself exists and can receive mail. Validation stops typos; verification stops bounces.

People use the two words as if they mean the same thing, and many tools mix them up. They are different steps, and the difference decides how many of your emails bounce.

Email validation: is it written correctly?

Validation looks only at the address itself:

  • Is the format right (one @, no spaces, allowed characters)?
  • Does the domain exist, and is it set up to receive email?
  • Is it a known throwaway (disposable) domain?
  • Is there an obvious typo, like gmial.com instead of gmail.com?

Validation is fast and catches mistakes at the moment someone types an address, for example in a sign-up form.

Email verification: does the mailbox exist?

Verification answers the harder question: will mail to this exact address arrive? An address can be perfectly formatted and still bounce because the person left, the mailbox was closed, or the name is spelled differently.

Verification checks the mailbox without sending an email, and tells you whether it is deliverable, undeliverable, risky or unknown.

Which one do you need?

  1. Sign-up and contact forms: validation in real time, to stop typos and fake addresses as people type. The Domailfix website form widget does this.
  2. Lists you are about to email: full verification, because old and bought lists are full of closed mailboxes. Use the bulk email verifier.
  3. One important address: verification, so you know before you send. Use the email verifier.

A list that passes validation can still bounce badly. Only verification tells you the mailbox is real.

The short version

Validation checks the spelling. Verification checks the mailbox. For anything you are going to send to, you want verification.

FAQ

Is email validation enough before a campaign?

Usually not. Validation catches typos and dead domains, but not closed mailboxes or people who have left. Verify the list before you send.

Does email verification send a test email?

No. A good verifier checks the mailbox without sending any message.

What does Domailfix do?

Both. Every check validates the address first, then verifies the mailbox and shows the result in the Email X-ray.
